AS the Borders prepares for a major clean-up operation in the wake of Storm Desmond, a new group has been set up to get help to those who need it.

Hawick has been one of the towns worst affected, with relentless rain causing the River Teviot to burst its banks – forcing hundreds of families to flee their homes in search of shelter.

However, the community spirit has shone through.

Volunteers have worked round the clock to man an evacuation centre set-up in the town's Teviot Leisure Centre, serve up hot drinks and food, and distribute sandbags in an effort to limit the damage.

Local residents and businesses have also opened their doors to those in need by offering everything from a roof over their head to baby clothes, as well as waders, towels, a van – and everything in between.

Now, as the water starts to subside and people think about returning home, a new page on social-networking site Facebook, entitled Hawick flood clean up, has been set-up to help co-ordinate the operation.

Commenting on the page last night (Saturday), Nicola Borthwick‎, from Hawick, said: “Me and my mates are up for helping in any way we can. Just tell us where to be.”

Meanwhile, local MP Calum Kerr has praised the work of the emergency services in responding to the major incident after spending the day with them.

He said: “One of the things that struck me is the amazing work of the flood crews who have been doing their very best all through this. Their dedication and skills have been remarkable.

“It’s very tough indeed for those who have been flooded and I understand how heartbreaking that must be. But the another thing that has really been shining through today is the sheer spirit that people in Hawick and across the Borders have shown. Even at this time of real adversity, that fills me with hope.”
