WE are all fortunate enough to live in Roxburgh, Ettrick and Lauderdale and able to enjoy our stunning countryside and towns with their important traditions and friendly neighbours.

I would like on your behalf to thank all those employed in Scottish Borders Council, the National Health Service Borders, the police, fire and ambulance Service for their professionalism in all they do for us. Also the many other professional and voluntary organisations.

This is the Centenary year of the start World War One. In November on Remembrance Sunday many of us stood by the War Memorials reflecting on those in our Armed Services during the past 100 years, who gave their lives and those who were wounded or severely effected while fighting for our Country. Also we should remember the terrible suffering this caused to many of our Border families who lost their loved ones. What a debt we owe them all.

I represent Her Majesty The Queen in this Lieutenancy and it amazes me the incredible number of organisations, all over the United Kingdom, that our Royal Family are involved with and in which they take such a keen interest, this is as well as the many public duties done by them both at home and abroad. It is no wonder they are dearly loved and respected.

At this Christmas time I turn my thoughts to all those who are unable to be at home with their families.

My wife and I wish them and everyone in Roxburgh, Ettrick & Lauderdale a happy Christmas and New Year and best wishes for 2015.

The Hon. Gerald Maitland-Carew Lord Lieutenant of Roxburgh, Ettrick and Lauderdale
