IT all began with a six-year-old girl’s wish to help children who suffer hair-loss during cancer treatment.

And it ended with a huge fundraising party involving most primary school pupils in Lauder.

Jade Gourdie decided to donate her hair to the Little Princess Trust after learning of a friend’s sister who lost her battle with cancer.

The charity provides real-life wigs to children, free of charge, who have lost their own hair through cancer treatment and other illnesses.

As well as wanting to donate her lengthy locks to the Little Princess Trust she also set up a fundraising page.

Last week she smashed through her £700 target.

And with help from friends and fellow pupils at Lauder Primary she has helped raise a further £700.

Jade’s mum Eilidh told the Border Telegraph: “Jade has raised so much more than we ever thought possible.

“She came up with idea after learning about the girl who died from cancer - she kept talking about donating her hair.” Initial plans to have her hair cut at a local salon were overtaken when more and more of Jade’s fellow pupils at Lauder Primary became involved.

Even one of her neighbours, eight-year-old Olivia Gibb, donated her 11-inch pony tail to the same cause.

And a crazy hair day at Lauder Primary raised a further £300 with an additional bake sale by Primary 5 to 7 pupils boosting the total with another £65.

Lauder’s Brownies and Rainbows donated their fundraising from World Thinking Day to the Little Princess Trust.

And on Saturday, as Jade’s 14 inches of flowing brown hair were finally chopped, a celebratory fundraising party in the Public Hall brought the town’s tally to more than £1400.

As well as Nicola from Borders Body and Mind performing the haircut, there was face painting, a bouncy castle, stalls, a raffle and refreshments during the two-hour bonanza.

Eilidh added: “Everybody has been fantastic.

“Saturday was such a fun day and became a real community event. We still have a few sponsor sheets to come in and our total is already at around £1400.

“Jade now wears her hair in a bob - and she quite likes it.”
