A PUB doorman who assaulted a customer to his severe injury and permanent disfigurement was ordered to pay his victim £500 in compensation at Selkirk Sheriff Court on Tuesday.

Wojtek Imbiorkiewicz was convicted of punching the man on the head and causing him to fall to the ground at The Ship Inn in East Port, Melrose, during the early hours of December 27.

The 24-year-old of Croft Street, Galashiels, was found guilty after a five day jury trial of the assault.

Defence lawyer Greg McDonell said the accused was in full time employment with a joinery firm and had only been helping the public house out on one night when the incident happened.

He added:"He came across an incident which he had not been involved in and punched the complainer once and caused the injury. He had no further involvement. He has shown a great deal of remorse for the incident."

Sheriff Peter Paterson told Imbiorkiewicz said: "You will realise as well as anybody that while you might have made only one punch the consequences were serious.

"But I am satisfied that your regret was genuine."

In addition to the £500 compensation, the sheriff imposed a one year restriction of liberty order keeping him in his home between 7pm and 7am weekdays and between 8pm and 7am at weekends.
