A 20-YEAR-OLD man held his mobile phone above a toilet cubicle in a superstore to film the people inside, Selkirk Sheriff Court has been told.

Charles Clamp, 20, claimed he had been told people had sex inside the cubicles and wanted to record it on his phone.

However, on the first occasion he tried to make a video of a young male employee at Tesco in Galashiels, who was doing the toilet.

The Asperger's syndrome sufferer immediately informed the store's security and an officer checked the cubicles.

Tessa Bradley, prosecuting, told Selkirk Sheriff Court how the security guard went into a cubicle beside an occupied one and feigned that he was doing the toilet.

She said: "A black mobile phone appeared over the top of the cubicle. The security staff member knocked on the door of the neighbouring cubicle and Clamp was found inside."

The bingo hall worker, who lives in Huddersfield Street, Galashiels, and is autistic, told police he "wanted to find people in the toilets having sexual relations."

The fiscal added:"he did not know if that was the case but had heard stories. He had gone into the toilet and behaved like this in the spur of the moment."

Defence lawyer Ed Hulme said:"He had heard from friends people used the toilets for sex. This particular thought sprang to mind and he tried to find out what was happening in the cubicle next to him."

Clamp pleaded guilty to conducting himself in a disorderly manner and repeatedly attempting to take photographs of people using the male toilet and commit and a breach of the peace on April 21 last year.

Sheriff Peter Paterson deferred sentence until July 6 for further information to be provided for the court before deciding whether Clamp's name should be placed on the Sexual Offender's Register.
