SELKIRK hopes to be in the running next year for the Floral Gateway Awards.

Following initial meetings a Selkirk in Bloom group has been formed to help the Royal Burgh blossom.

And the call has gone out to any green-fingered volunteers.

Selkirk Community Council chair Graham Easton said: "Our initial meeting was well attended and a lot of interest has been generated.

"The feeling is, that if other towns can do this so can we.

"This will come down to the volunteers - the more we have the better we will be."

During last month's initial meeting representatives from Lauder, Melrose and Newtown gave demonstrations on how their groups operate.

Selkirkshire councillor Michelle Ballantyne said: "This makes such a difference to a town. Communities can reclaim unsightly areas and a huge amount of satisfaction grows from groups like these."
