POLICE are attempting to trace bogus callers who are targetting the central Borders.

Yesterday (Thursday) we reported how a gang of three men were attempting to con their way into houses in Selkirk with a story about roof repairs.

It has now emerged that the same gang, using a white transit van and ladders, have been trying the same ploy in Tweedbank.

PC Kirsty McNeish said: "These males have highlighted that there may be problems with the roof.

"They have then stated that they need access to the attic to check the roof, thereby gaining access to the house.

"This follows similar previous incidents in the Scottish Borders whereby males managed to gain thousands of pounds."

Two of the men are believed to be in their 30s with the other still in his teens.

They all have Scottish west-coast accents and are often seen carrying sets of ladders.

PC Neish added: "It would appear they are travelling throughout the Scottish Borders at this time.

"The males are believed to be driving a white Ford Transit van and a white Citreon Berlingo.

Police Scotland do not recommend dealing with cold-callers for property maintenance and home repairs."

Anyone with information on the three men should contact Police Scotland on 101, or in an emergency 999.
