A PUBLIC toilet block in Selkirk is on a closure hit list.

Scottish Borders Council is currently reviewing all of its 43 public conveniences in the region in a bid to make budget savings.

And a proposed closure list is expected to be announced later this year.

But Selkirkshire councillor Gordon Edgar has warned Souters to expect the worst.

He said: “The review is looking at toilets all across the Borders but there is a strong possibility one of Selkirk’s public conveniences will close.

“There is an opportunity for communities to adopt their toilets and run them, and that is being discussed. But if no group comes forward it is likely they will close.” It is estimated that it costs around £6,000 a year to keep each public convenience open.

An exact number of how many toilets will face closure remains unknown.

But talks are at an advanced stage.

A Scottish Borders Council spokesperson told us: “A review of services provided by Neighbourhood Operations is currently taking place, which includes public toilets across the region.

“No final decisions have been made yet, with Neighbourhood Operations staff presently consulting with councillors, community councils and local interest groups in each ward area.”
