ONE of sport's greatest trophies arrived in Galashiels at the weekend.

The Davis Cup, which was won for the first time in 79 years by Great Britain, is currently on a 90-date tour of the country.

Dozens of families took the opportunity to have their photographs taken with the stunning silverware at the Borders Tennis Centre on Sunday.

The Brits, who feature both Andy and Jamie Murray, lifted the Davis Cup at the end of 2015 after winning the final against Belgium in Ghent.

Ewan Jackson, Chief Executive of Live Borders told the Border Telegraph: ‘We are delighted to have the Davis Cup Legacy Tour visit the Borders Tennis Centre - what the team did was inspirational.

"We are excited to work with our partners in tennis to provide opportunities to take part in the sport which is now more popular than ever following the fantastic win.”

More and more youngsters are now picking up racquets as tennis fever spreads across the whole of Great Britain.

In the Borders nine additional primary schools entered the regional championships.

And development officer for tennis in the Borders, Ally McCulloch, is buoyed by the growing interest and participation.

He said: "We were delighted to have the Davis Cup come to the Borders on Sunday - it was really enjoyable, and busy, day at the Tennis Centre.

"Lots of people took the opportunity to come along and have their photo taken with the trophy. We also had a lot of fun activities going on.

"We are really busy just now in the Borders from our Eight-and-Under section to the 18-and-Under section."

Borders tennis bosses will be welcoming the return of the Great British Tennis weekends once again this summer as the push continues to encourage new players onto the courts.
