AN up and coming young boxing hopeful from Galashiels claimed a notable scalp at the Hawick Boxing Show at the weekend.

Max Rogerson, a 14 year old Gala Academy pupil representing the Bronx Boxing Club in Tranent, took on the reigning Scottish Champion Thomas Fowley from Craigmillar ABC in Edinburgh.

Fowley who was more experienced and will be aged 16 in July, was very confident going into the fight having won the 46kg Gold Medal in the Scottish National Championships last month.  Both boys weighed in at 47kg and competed over three x two minute rounds.

Fighting behind a tight defence, good head movement and jab, Rogerson held centre ring and fought on the front foot with a high workrate which he maintained for the duration of the contest landing regularly and outworking his opponent.

Towards the end of the second round Fowley started showing signs of tiredness and was caught with a big right hook as Rogerson was more and more content to fight toe-to-toe, the end of the round coming at a good time for the Craigmillar boxer.

Rogerson started the third round at a fast pace and half way through the final period his opponent’s body seemed to sag somewhat when the Gala boy landed a big left hook.  He moved in to try and force a finish but despite being fatigued Fowley’s experience and determination saw him through to the final bell.

Rogerson’s dominance was reflected on all judges scorecards with a Unanimous Decision in what was his biggest victory to date after only less than two years in the sport.  He said “I was happy with the win and hope to be fighting again in Leith next month.

“In the Autumn I will be going to New York with my brother Lex and gym mates to spar in the States which will be a great experience for us."
