GALASHIELS netball players scored their first victory in the Borders Under 15 Development League last weekend.

The nine-strong squad, comprising Galashiels Academy and Langlee Primary School pupils, headed to Peebles High School for the match against the Tweeddale Tigers.

Despite a promising start to life in the Development League, the girls were still looking for their first win.

The Gala team was captained by Alyssa Messenger (S3), with players Zara Ferahi (S3), Emma Martin (S3), Chloe Dyer (S3), Emma Brus (S2), Melody McConchie (S2) and Caitlin Darling (S1) playing, along with Langlee pupils Erin Gillie and Erin Stephenson.

Elena Onut, also from Langlee Primary, officiated at the match by manning the scoreboard.

Gala took a while to warm up, losing the first quarter 2-7.

But in the second quarter they created more spaces and improved their passing, getting the ball out to shooters Emma Brus and Erin Stephenson who netted four goals to close the deficit to 6-8.

With some fantastic play in the third quarter, Gala made some superb interceptions and clawed back the lead from the Tigers to go in at 10-8.

They consolidated their advantage in the final quarter, defending well and getting the ball to the on-form shooters who scored another five goals, with the scoreline finishing 15-11 to Gala.

Coached by Marion Romeril, the girls were mentored by Sophie Wilson (S6) and player/mentors Caris Brus (S4) and Sophie Birtwistle (S4).
