Selkirk 3

NEW manager Ian Fergus pulled of a masterstroke in his first game to salvage a point against Stirling University.

Despite arriving with only 11 outfield players and three goalkeepers the new Selkirk gaffer guided his young team to a deserved point.

And the Yarrow Park faithful who made their way north believe they should even have snatched victory in injury time.

Fergus told us: “It looked like the game was getting away from us so we threw three young players up front and we got the rewards.

“It looked to me like we should have had a penalty in injury time as well to make it an even better comeback but I’ll settle for the point.

“The boys were buzzing at the end and I hope this is the start of something good at Selkirk.”

Despite an enthusiastic start from the visitors it was the home side who edged in front through Chris Geddes.

Without two – Murray Christie and James Harley – of Selkirk’s normal back four, the makeshift defence still managed to snuff out a couple of other attacks leading up to the half hour.

And the hard work was rewarded with a Phil Addison equaliser.

Selkirk were giving as good they were getting on the wide park at Falkirk Stadium.

But a lapse in concentration on the hour allowed Lewis Bonar to sneak in and convert past Gregor Amos.

It looked as though the points were won ten minutes later as former Motherwell midfielder Paul McCafferty hit the net to make it 3-1.

But a reshuffle in the Selkirk ranks, which saw Kerr Scott joined by Addison and Dale Baxter up front, led to an amazing turnaround in the final 10 minutes.

Addison pulled a goal back with a sublime finish before Scott smashed home an equaliser.

With just 30 seconds left on the clock, Scott burst into the area and looked to be tripped as he was about to pull the trigger.

Despite the protests the referee waved play on.

Fergus added: “There are a lot of positives we can take from the game. I asked the boys for character and that’s what I got.

“I want to see them smiling on the pitch and the way to do that is by starting to win.”
