ON a glorious Saturday afternoon Gala Waverley held their opening day with a healthy 43 players and six non-playing guests attending.

The lady President Margaret Wilson did the honours for men's President James Hill by throwing the jack.

With the green in good condition a close match was won by the President's team over vice-president William Brownlee Juniors. A break in the proceedings was held to watch the Scottish Grand National but judging by the lack of cheers there were not many people on the winner! During the president's remarks the refurbishment of the bar was mentioned and this was officially opened as "Percy's Bar". This project was funded by a legacy from the late Percy Bell for which the club was very grateful and thanks were also expressed to all members who contributed to the project. Thanks also go to WSZ Joiners who carried out the joiner work to a great standard. Further appreciation was expressed to those members who have helped in the cleaning and painting etc in the weeks leading up the opening day. In addition to these jobs the green bankings have been refitted and the place is looking grand.

After having a lovely buffet prepared by the ladies of the catering committee a quiz prepared by Neil Kimber was held with the Bar Babes winning with an impressive score. This was followed by a few games of bingo before music played for the remainder of the evening.

This Wednesday sees a men's practice match before the first league games the following week that includes a team entered in the Seniors league. Lists are on the notice board for competitions and league match availability and members are asked to get their names on as soon as possible. The subs are due to be paid by April 30 and the Treasurer would appreciate these being paid on or before that date.

The club are looking forward to a very busy season ahead and with 10 new playing and nine new social members are hoping to have a few social events which can be viewed on the club Facebook page.
