SHARP-shooting Francesco de Martino from Franco's Italian restaurant in Peebles is set to pull a different trigger on Saturday.

Franco, who represented Scotland last year in the Olympic Trap Shooting Home International, is to act as honorary starter of the Cademuir Rollercoaster hill race which takes place this Saturday.

Franco, who is the main sponsor of the race, even had some practice last week at the race's launch.

The Cademuir Rollercoaster follows the usual two-course menu of a 3km race at 2pm and 6km race at 2.30pm on the inviting paths and slopes of Cademuir hill on the south side of the town.

Franco's proprietor Marisa de Martino said: "We like to put something back into community events like this and are pleased to help the Rollercoaster again.

"We look forward to welcoming some of the runners off the hill for their post-race re-fuelling."

Race organiser Gregor Nicholson from the host club Moorfoot Runners believes the races will attract some of the region's top runners as well as a few newcomers.

He said, "The 6km race takes in the summit of Cademuir and provides an enjoyably challenging test for the seasoned runner but it's not so hard as to preclude the fit novice or newcomer.

"The 3km route, which is open to all ages from 11 up, turns for home before the main climb to the summit and although it is a lesser test, it will still provide a decent test for the legs.

"But what better incentive than vouchers from Franco's as prizes, with the 6km male and female winners also receiving a bottle of Franco's top-notch prosecco."

Entries, priced at £2, will be taken on the day at Peebles High School sports centre up to 30 minutes pre-race.
