Selkirk Juniors had been rocked by financial irregularities last month with the AGM being abandoned.

The money had been repaid by last Wednesday’s EGM but the problems had led to the club’s chair, Sheila Cochrane, and secretary, Sally Bell, deciding to step down.

Officials from the senior section of the Yarrow Park club, which is run separately, wanted to take over the running of the age group teams.

But following an appeal for replacements on the junior committee, the posts were filled by parents.

The outgoing chair, Sheila Cochrane, told us: “The remaining committee positions were all filled at a successful EGM last Wednesday evening ensuring that the club can continue as normal and fulfil all the requirements set out by the SFA Quality Mark.

“Like most committees, Selkirk Juniors have had their work cut out trying to get more members to put themselves forward and take on a role.

“This is nothing new to the club and as previous years, often results in an EGM having to be called. We are a voluntary run organisation and rely heavily on helpers giving their time, going on courses and taking on responsibilities, all unpaid.” Discussions had taken place with the club’s senior section - but no solid rescue plan had been tabled.

Mrs Cochrane added: “They did offer the help of the main Selkirk Football Club but when asked for more concrete details on what they could do for us, we did not get a response.

“Fortunately parents put themselves forward and it is good to see new people coming onto the committee.

“We feel strongly that the club will benefit from fresh ideas and the more people getting involved the better.

“Selkirk Juniors ethos is to ensure football is available to all kids regardless of their skill level.” Membership for juniors will remain at only £10 per season with the youth teams still only paying £30 for the year - which covers the cost of strips, referee fees, facility fees and equipment.

The Yarrow Park Juniors currently have four team splaying in the Border Junior League with a furtyer three teams playing at youth level.

A spokeswoman for the new committee said: “All the age levels have qualified coaches and we are continually looking for more volunteers to go on the coaching courses.

“We are currently looking for someone to become involved with the Under 8s age group so if anyone is interested please get in touch at selkirkjuniorfc@yahoo.co.uk” Selkirk Junior FC will also be holding its annual Football Fun Day this summer with further details to be published nearer the August date.
