MELROSE Waverley Tennis Club were in the swing of things this season, with a number of regional wins.

And at the annual prize giving Mrs Brenda Lumley presented the trophies to the winners of the Club Championships.

The club celebrated their successes including the men’s first team winning the Borders summer league and the district section of the Scottish Cup.

The latter got them a game against Montrose, where they lost in a very competitive match.

At the Vet’s tournament held in August in St Boswells, an all-Melrose mens singles final saw Ian Reilly retaining the trophy by beating Iain Laidlaw in a highly competitive match.

The two also won another men’s doubles trophy, making it eight times champions.

Mike Turner and Tony Douglas won the 55s men’s doubles and at the Junior Confined, while Sophie McBrayne was a very close runner up in two singles Borders age groups, under 16s, under 18s and also in senior ladies’ confined.

The Club entered numerous teams into all the Junior and Senior Border leagues over the whole season.

Although competition titles are important to the Club, its main aim is to provide an inclusive, welcoming tennis experience for all ages and abilities, so that everyone can enjoy both social and competitive tennis.

This season has seen over 100 children taking part in the Club’s coaching programme.

And they have also provided coaching for adults, improvers and beginners. There is a strong, keen senior team (over 70s ) who not only play three times a week, but also enjoy games against other like-minded clubs.
