SWIM Team Borders tasted success again at the East District Age Group Championships in Glenrothes.

In winning a number of medals and contesting several finals the team came away from the competition with an impressive 18 Personal Bests (PBs) from 20 events.

Amy Fraser (15) of Gala Amateur Swimming Club (ASC) claimed gold in the 14/15 years 800m Freestyle with a well deserved PB. Fraser then backed up with another PB to win silver in the 14/15 years 200m Individual Medley.

In the 12/13 years 1500m Freestyle, Kelso ASC's Ryan Brown was the quickest 12 year old after recording a 49 second PB. Placing eighth overall, Brown swam a PB through the 800m mark of this event also. Brown then placed second in the 12/13 years 100m Backstroke with a huge five second PB to qualify for the East District finals in March. He was the quickest 12 year old in this event also. Again, Brown was the quickest 12 year old in the 12/13 years 200m Individual Medley with another big PB of seven seconds.

Sixteen-year-old Duns ASC representative Euan Johnston finished just outside the medals in fourth place with an impressive 20 second PB in the 16 and over 1500m Freestyle - Johnston also recorded PB's at the 400 and 800m marks in this event. Johnston recorded a PB in the 16 and over 200m Individual Medley and then capped off a very successful weekend placing fifth with yet another PB in the 16 and over 800m Freestyle.

Representing Kelso ASC, 13-year-old Lucy Hope placed fifth in the 12/13 years 800m Freestyle with a well deserved PB. Hope later placed sixth in the final of the 12/13 years 200m Individual Medley with a significant three second PB.

Kirsty Paterson (17) of Duns ASC, placed fifth in the final of the 16 and over 200m Individual Medley with a strong swim.

Teviotdale ASC's Jessica Wilcox (14) narrowly missed a place in the final with a seventh placed finish in the 14/15 years 200m Individual Medley. Wilcox was the third quickest 14 year old in the district in this event.

Also representing Teviotdale ASC, Wilcox's 16-year-old brother Scott placed ninth in the 16 and over 200m Individual Medley with a strong swim and another PB for the team.

Peebles ASC representative, 12 year old Gregor Swinney, placed eighth in the 12/13 years 100m Backstroke with a four second PB. Another significant PB in the 12/13 years 100m Butterfly saw Swinney place tenth. He then made it three from three with yet another big four second PB in the 12/13 years 200m Individual Medley.

Chloe Mitchell, 13 of Kelso ASC, recorded a massive 34 second PB in the 12/13 years 800m Freestyle placing 13th. Mitchell then continued with her recent PB streak recording another solid PB in the 12/13 years 200m Individual Medley.

Kristie Waugh (13) of Teviotdale ASC, rounded off the team's 'PB assault' for the weekend. Waugh added two more significant PB's to the tally in the 12/13 years 100m Butterfly and 200m Individual Medley.

Scott and Jessica Wilcox, Amy Fraser, Kirsty Paterson and Lucy Hope are supported by Scottish Borders Council's (SBC) Athlete Support Programme (ASP).

Coach of Swim Team Borders and Borders Performance Coach, Alex Jordan, said: "The team blew me away with one big PB after another over the weekend. Their training performances have improved significantly of late, but I still wasn't expecting such a rate of progress in competition just yet. The best thing is they will only continue to get better from here."

Executive Member for Sport, Culture and Community Education Councillor Graham Garvie added: "Once again this team of promising young athletes continues to go from strength to strength proving that the level of training they are receiving is paying off. I would like to congratulate them on their success and look forward to hearing more about their successes in the coming months."

The success didn't stop with Swim Team Borders. Club swimmers from Duns, Eyemouth, Kelso and Teviotdale Swimming Clubs made finals and gained PB's in almost every event they contested.
