At the start of the event, held in the Philiphaugh Suite, guests were invited to submit written questions, which the Glasgow Warriors pair answered from the stage later in the evening.

“We were delighted Lee and Alex took time out from their busy schedules to come back to Philiphaugh,” Selkirk president John Rutherford.

“They answered all the questions put to them with both candour and humour, and gave a real insight into what it’s like being a professional rugby player in the modern ERA.” The two internationalists both have extremely busy summers ahead.

Lee is a member of the Scotland sevens squad at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, while Alex (recently named Glasgow Warriors’ ‘Test Player of the Year’) has been selected to go on Scotland’s tour of the USA, Canada, Argentina and South Africa.

It was also announced at the dinner that Selkirk will once again be captained by lock forward Andrew Renwick in season 2014/2015, with centre Ross Nixon reappointed as his vice-captain.

Andrew was presented with his captain’s tankard by John Rutherford, and the Yarrow farmer told guests he believed the 1st XV could definitely challenge for promotion from the RBS National League next season.

“We had some great victories this season, with the 18-15 win up at Watsonians in November showing the huge amount of character and belief there is in this team. There’s already a positive feeling in the squad about next season, and I’d ask all the Selkirk players to get behind the new coaches and get back into promotion contention.” Earlier in the evening, dinner chairman John Rutherford told the 90-strong audience that he never failed to be impressed by the commitment, skills and loyalty of the club’s players, office-bearers and volunteers.

He said the 1st XV had played some great rugby during the season, and congratulated the ‘A’ XV on managing to keep their place in a highly competitive RBS Reserve League National 1. He also had a special word of praise for the Selkirk Stormers side, who lifted the RBS Reserve League East 2 title.

The toast to “Selkirk RFC & the Game of Rugby” was proposed in entertaining fashion by John Htet-Khin, while Selkirk secretary Ian Walker gave an amusing toast to “Our Guests”.

A comprehensive vote of thanks was proposed by Selkirk vice-president Mick Craig.

During the dinner a presentation was made to 1st XV team manager and match programme editor John Smail, who is stepping down from these two roles.

One of the highlights of the night was the announcement of the 2014 player awards, with the top trophy – the Boag Cup for Selkirk’s ‘Player of the Year’ – being won by centre Scott Hendrie, a former recipient of the award.
