It was the home side’s highest score over its Malleny Park rivals and scores, in all aspects of the game, flowed with a high tide of expectancy among the home crowd.

The points finished five short of Gala’s 65-17 Premiership victory against Stirling County in 2012.

There were three tries apiece for Craig Dods and Graham Speirs as Gala swept to a victory, which no-one in the stand and on the terraces would have envisaged on their way to the ground.

Speirs, getting his breath back after an exhilarating contest, said after the final whistle: “It was good to see the backs get on the score-sheet (all the tries). We got the ball on the front foot, and it is a good thing when we make breaks, that we finish them off.

“There was a good understanding in the team, and we have a new backs coach with Chris Dalgleish coming in and the boys have a lot of confidence.” Gala’s aggressive running, pace and handling stretched Currie to the limit, and the two tries from Dods in the final three minutes epitomised its overall performance.

Coach George Graham added: “There was some fantastic rugby played and everyone played their part.

“The only disappointment was the number of points we leaked, and scores we have conceded in two games are well below the standards we have set ourselves. We need to tighten up and be a bit more selfish in defence.

“But you cannot be too hard on the boys when you put 60 points past Currie.” New Currie coach Ben Cairns said: “The majority of their tries came off our mistakes. We gave them too many turn-overs and could not get enough of the ball.” Gala had the benefit of two professionals, Brett Thomson, who scored a brace of scores, and Grayson Hart.

By half-time, Gala led 29-15 with tries from Dods, Speirs (2), Ewan Scott, and Thomson, while Currie kept in the hunt with two scores in as many minutes from Chris Logan and Ross Weston, Joe Reynolds converting one and a penalty.

Gala kept Currie at bay after the interval before tries from George Graham, Thomson, Speirs and a late Dods double sealed an exciting win.

There was a late consolation score for Currie’s Michael Vernel in a match refereed by James McPhail, a New Zealander living in Holland.
