Having won three Scottish championships in the last four years, he pointed out the Greenyards side have made a habit of winning.

And the former Melrose captain, who has been aligned with his hometown club in the pro-player draft this season, could return to help them lift silverware this season.

Speaking to the Border Telegraph, Wight, who watched the 22-10 victory over Gala from the sidelines, said: “I thought the Melrose pack was outstanding, and we played on the front foot which makes a massive difference in these games.

“The club has been three times champions in the last four years and not a lot has changed, some new faces have come in to keep things fresh and we’ve kept the core of the squad that have been through it so they know what it takes to win.

“Now, having conceded 43 points against Heriot’s last week and 10 points against Gala, it’s just about getting consistent performances each week.” Wight returned home last week from Australia where he captained Scotland at the Gold Coast Sevens.

And, with Melrose returning to form after a stuttering start to the season, he revealed there was a real buzz about the club.

Wight said: “We’re always happy to get one over on Gala, especially being a Melrose man and being affiliated here this year.

“There is a buzz about the club, the boys in the changing room are delighted, especially with other results going their way, it’s right back in our favour with Heriot’s beating Ayr.” The Melrose victory knocked Gala off the top of the BT Premiership table, with Heriot’s, who defeated third placed Ayr, being installed as the new league leaders. And the top four sides all meet again this weekend, with Gala at home to Heriot’s and Melrose away to Ayr.

Looking ahead to the games, Dalziel said: “Gala and Ayr and Heriot’s have been more consistent in the first half of this season so they were deservedly quite a few points clear a couple of weeks ago. We knew we could either feel sorry for ourselves or roll our sleeves up and take them on head on.

“We know ourselves the quality we’ve got in this squad, we just need to be a bit more consistent with our performance. I just felt that we were on it right from the start against Heriot’s.

“It’s been quite tense; when you are champions, every week seems to be a task, you’ve got to ask so much from the players and everywhere we go everybody wants to beat you so much. And when results don’t go your way, you can let that get to you a bit.” But he added: “It’s not job done in anyway, we’ve won one game of rugby, the players will enjoy it and have a beer and then they will get the sleeves up and back to it this week.” Melrose welcomed back Bruce Colvine and Joe Helps against Gala - a timely boost to Dalziel’s squad. And another influential player, Grant Runciman, who joined Colvine in New Zealand this summer, is the next player due to return.

Dalziel said: “BC is outstanding, he’s a leader as well and demands respect in the changing room. He and Joe (Helps) and guys like Richard Ferguson are the absolute core of this team. And Pumba (Grant Runciman) is on his way back as well in early December.

“The challenge is now can we repeat that. We’ve had two good performances against Heriot’s and Gala, we now need to go to a hostile place and it’s a big bus journey, but if we want to have real aspirations to get to the top of the league and be real contenders then we need to go to places like Ayr and get results.” Elsewhere in the BT Premiership, Hawick are at home to Boroughmuir.

And, in BT National League 1, league leaders Selkirk will aim to extend their unbeaten run at home to Marr, there is another Borders derby at Riverside Park where Jed-Forest entertain Peebles, and Kelso are at home to GHA.
