FIFTEEN members of the Scottish Borders Hill Walking Club assembled at Lauder on Sunday, October 5.

Two of the group completed a circular walk of six miles, Inchkeith being the farthest point reached.

The group of 13 followed the tracks, first along the Lauder Burn, passing the rifle range and quarry, leading eventually to the B6362 (Lauder to Stow). After crossing this road we walked past the remnants of a Hut Circle and up to the adjacent cairn – an unusual one, being longer, wider, and not as high as the more standard style. From here we made our way to Burgess’ Cairn, which is a much bigger and significant structure altogether. From here we walked north, then north-east towards Whitlaw farm, stopping for lunch near Elliot’s Plantation. Fortunately, the cattle which had been close to the track through the farm when the route was recced, were now some distance away, so those who are nervous in the presence of cattle had no concerns. After Whitlaw we made our way to Trabrownhill, where we were greeted by two dogs: the friendly labrador accompanied us through the area around the houses, but the Border Terrier kicked up such a loud fuss, it had to be picked up carried away. The next landmark was the Lauderdale Hunt Kennels, and here we were greeted by the hounds: apologies to all in the area for causing a disturbance to the Sunday peace!

We continued down the road towards the A68 until we met the former railway line, and followed it back to Lauder.

This distance walked was about 12 miles, and although it was a cool day, it was thankfully dry.

The next walk is Cessford to Harestanes on Sunday, October 19.

We are getting a bus from Harestanes at 9.30am, and a £5 contribution each is required towards the cost.
