SHE is one of the rising stars of the piano.

And she’s coming to Melrose.

Ivana Gavrić moved from her native Sarajevo, where she was taught by her mother, to study piano at the Guildhall School of Music at Cambridge as well as the Royal College of Music in London.

Over the past few years she has received countless plaudits as well as earned praise for her charitable work.

After early success in her career, Ivana was described as a 'rising star’ in the BBC Music Magazine, winning the 2011 Newcomer of the Year Award, and, following her US debut, praised as 'impressive, insightful... a ravishing performance’.

Her repertoire has been eclectic, with interpretations of music by all the great composers plus lesser-known modern works receiving wide acclaim.

She is an ambassador for the charity, Musicians without Borders, which uses the power of music to support individuals and communities devastated by war and armed conflict.

Ivana will perform at Melrose Parish Church Hall for the Melrose Music Society on Sunday, October 26.

The programme starts with Schubert’s Sonata in A minor, D784 - a hauntingly powerful piece written when the composer was only in his mid-20s.

This is followed by Janáček’s 'In the Mists’, which abounds with both gentle melodies and passionate outbursts, and two works by Rachmaninov, Prelude in G major and a Moment Musical in E minor which draws inspiration from several sources including Chopin’s preludes.

After the interval Ivana will perform the Scottish Premiere of Cheryl Frances-Hoad’s Lyric Pieces, a Ballade in G minor and Slåtter (peasant dances) by Grieg before finishing with this composer’s own Lyric Pieces, Butterfly and one of his best-loved piano compositions,’ Wedding Day at Troldhaugen’.

Sunday’s concert begins at 7.30pm and non-members are welcome.

Tickets at the door are priced at £12 and accompanied children are admitted for free.
