STUNT riders from the Borders are saddling up for the latest Scottish blockbuster.

And the screen writer believes the death-dicing horse skills of Les Amis d’Onno are the icing on the cake of his big budget historical epic.

The Fairy Flag is currently being filmed at various locations around the country.

It brings to life the legend of the Clan Macleod and their supernatural banner on the Isle of Skye.

The Fairy Flag, which is the biggest independent Scottish film for 20 years, is both a romance and realistic historical account of the clans.

Soeras Wallace - Mel Gibson’s fight trainer for Braveheart - has been heavily involved in recreating the battle scenes.

But for screen writer Marco Palmer the Borders equestrian stunt crew have been priceless. He told us: “This is a Scottish story that will have a world-wide appeal.

“Filming is going well and we are confident the finished film for release will be every bit as good as we hope.

“For any film like Fairy Flag you need the battle recreations to be accurate and realistic. We wouldn’t have been able to do many of the scenes we wanted without Les Amis d’Onno.

“There isn’t a stunt they can’t do.” The Fairy Flag has used locations all over Scotland, including Skye, Glencoe, Balgonie Castle and Beecraigs Park near Linlithgow, as well as Morocco and London.

Former rugby player and model, Chris Capaldi takes the leading role along with Irish actress Jade Yourell.

And amongst the star-studded supporting cast are Dave Anderson, who appeared in both Local Hero and Gregory’s Girl, and Dave Finnegan from The Commitments.

Filming is scheduled to finish at the end of this month when the technical crew, led by director David Izatt, will retire to the studio for post-production.

A release date has yet to be pencilled in but it is expected to be early in 2015.

Mr Palmer added: “We have assembled a very talented team for The Fairy Flag and we are all excited about it.” Les Amis d’Onno have been based at Lanton Hill Farm near Jedburgh since 2008.

Sue, Bethany and Jacob Martin and their team perform all over Scotland and further afield.
