KELSO Rugby Club hosted the ClubSport Roxburgh annual awards night on Friday (November 3).

The members of the ClubSport Committee were joined by councillors and representatives from Live Borders and partner agencies who work together to support health and wellbeing in the area.

Hawick jockey Jason Hart was awarded the Sports Personality of the Year prize for his outstanding performances in the past year and has now joined the elite as a Grade 1 winning jockey.

Hart has rode 100 winners in the year and 800 in his career.

This year he has winners up and down the country including a hat trick at Haydock, a double at Chester and wins at Ascot, York and Doncaster, among others. At the Glorious Goodwood Festival he finished with three firsts and two seconds.

Matty Douglas from Hawick RFC was awarded the Coach of the Year award after masterminding their title charge. Despite only being 28 years of age, Douglas’ achievements are outstanding and a credit to his coaching and man-management skills. He has also been appointed the head coach of the South of Scotland in the Inter District Championship.

Liam Rutherford, of Hawick Boxing Club, was awarded a special achievement award for his contribution to the boxing club. His performances as a boxer in the ring were recognised, along with his coaching to the younger generation at the club.

Julie Forrest from Teviotdale Indoor Bowling Club and Alastair White, of Jedburgh Bowling Club, were recognised for their performances in the past year on the indoor and outdoor scene.

Kelso's Callum Pollhammer was awarded the Junior Coach of the Year award for his outstanding contribution to both the town's football and cricket club and his work with the Kelso Active Schools team in local primary schools.

Phoebe Gale from Denholm was awarded the Junior Sports Personality of the Year gong for her outstanding year in mountain bike downhill. Gale rode in the UCI World Championships held in Fort William this year and finished fifth in the elite section. Phoebe is ranked 10th in the world for her discipline.

Hawick Boxing Club were awarded the Club of the Year prize for their outstanding achievements both in and out of the ring. The club were commended for the excellent work they do in the local community for people suffering with mental health issues and also for the performances of their boxers in the ring, with boxers competing at national and regional levels.

David Laing, of Kelso, was awarded the Disability Award for his outstanding contribution to disability sport in the Borders for many years. Laing is a huge factor behind the successful Kelso Boccia Club that operates on a weekly basis in the town.

Hawick RFC were awarded the Team of the Year after their outstanding season, which culminated in the club winning the league and Scottish cup double. Not only did the club win both trophies, they went the full season undefeated, winning all matches with the exception of a draw against Selkirk.

Stephen Rock from Kelso Football Club was awarded the Scottish Clubsport/Service to Local Sport prize for his outstanding contribution and dedication to football in the Kelso area – notably his work with Kelso Thistle and volunteer hours he does behind the scenes.
